Sequoia National Forest

You cannot live in this area and not visit this forest. The giant sequoia tree groves and the trails around them are epic and should be on every American's bucket list. There are beaches and dunes here, opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, boating of all sorts, rock climbing, and even lots of winter sports activities.

If you've never been here before, you definitely need to make time to see the giant sequoia national monument, which is in the Hume Lake ranger district. This monument is a spectacular section encompassing 38 groves of giant sequoias. In this area, you can camp, get concessions as needed, stay in a refurbished historic cabin, explore 550 miles of recreational trails, and use your off-road vehicles. You can also go hunting and fishing in season with the appropriate California licenses

Santa Barbara

Take a day to visit historic Santa Barbara on the central California coast. This is a gorgeous city with historic buildings in the white stucco style of the Spanish colonial history of the town. The streets are lined with boutique shops and restaurants, and there are lots of places to explore. Be sure to explore the old Mission Santa Barbara, which is a 1786 Spanish mission with beautiful ocean views and a historic mausoleum.

California Living Museum

This is an especially good place if your kids are younger and you want to keep them entertained but not venture too far from home in case they have a problem.

The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 9 AM until 4 PM. Adults are $10, seniors are $7, children from 3 to 12 are $6, and children under three are free. Veterans and active military are free as well, and seniors get 50% off on Tuesdays. Be sure to plan your visit around the Central California Children's Rail Road schedule: an all-volunteer train ride that lets kids ride unlimited for two dollars on the weekends.

Wind Wolves Preserve Wildflower Trail Wind Wolves Preserve is one of the largest nature preserves on the west coast and offers some seriously picturesque views for hikers. Here, miles of trail wind through some of the most gorgeous wildflower meadows you'll ever see. Visit in spring and you're sure to be dazzled by the brightly colored flowers stretching as far as the eye can see. Goldfields, blue-eyed grass, poppies, and more combine to create an unforgettable natural display. There's plenty more pristine habitat to explore along the trail too, including meadows, forests, wetlands, and rivers. If you're lucky, you could spot plenty of wildlife including grazing elk and plenty of birds. Wind Wolves Preserve is located on Maricopa Highway, a little way south of downtown, and admission is free. 2. Bakersfield Bluffs This 3-mile trail is peaceful and secluded, perfect for a quiet afternoon stroll. Following the route of the Kern River, it's a flat, smooth path that should be suitable for most skill levels, although there is some moderate elevation in places. A parking lot is available at the trailhead near Panorama Park, and the path is dog and kid-friendly. Shade is very limited, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen if you're hiking on a hot day. 3. Hart Park Trail Another path that takes in good views of the bluffs, Hart Park Trail stretches for just over 2 miles along the Kern River, featuring plenty of elevation along its short length. Plenty of parking is available at the park but be aware that the access road to the trail is a little rutted, so watch out for potholes! 4. Badger Gap and Little Tenant Spring Trail If you're keen to take on a challenging hike with plenty of elevation, look no further than Badger Gap and Tenant Spring Trail. Although there are plenty of inclines and the surface is a little rough, the reward is panoramic views over the valleys. This is another gorgeous trail to visit in the springtime when wildflowers blanket the sides of the path. Lots of wildlife can be seen in the area, including deer, eagles, and snakes. This trail is located within Sequoia National Forest, a short drive from town. Stop by the visitor center for parking and maps. The access road is a little choppy, so be sure your vehicle can handle off-road driving before making the trip!
