An Up-Close Look at the 2021 Chevy Suburban

What’s New

The 2021 Suburban is an all-new generation with a huge range of changes. Some of the most notable improvements include an independent rear-wheel suspension system, a longer wheelbase, and the addition of a diesel engine option.

Powertrain Options

The 2021 Suburban comes with two awesome V8 engines and a Duramax diesel engine. The 5.3-liter 355-horsepower V8 engine is standard on all but the High Country trim. It is paired with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. The High Country trim gets a 6.2-liter 420-horsepower V8 engine. The optional six-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine has been tuned for towing and turns out 277 horsepower. The Duramax delivers 460 pound-feet of torque, which is more than either of the V8 engines. Fully equipped, the Suburban can tow 8,300 pounds.

Drivability

The 2021 Suburban provides drivers with an exceptional experience, in part due to the all-new independent rear-wheel suspension. The Suburban can also be fitted with adaptive dampers for an even better ride and adjustable air suspension. The AAS is particularly useful when the SUV is fully loaded or when towing. Air suspension also improves aerodynamics, can be used when passengers are getting in and out, and for raising ground clearance when required. All models are also available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.

Fuel Economy

The 2021 Suburban offers great mileage for a vehicle of this size and engines with that much power behind them. Obviously, the diesel engine will get you the best fuel economy. The 5.3-liter V8 still delivers 16 mpg around town and 20 mpg on the highway. The monstrous 6.2-liter only falls below the 5.3-liter just slightly, providing 15 mpg around the city, 20 mpg on the freeway, and 17 mpg combined. Both of the V8 engines save on fuel by using automatic cylinder stop/start deactivation.

Trim Levels

The 2021 Suburban is available in five trim levels, including the standard LS model. The RST is loaded with sporty styling and a tough-looking exterior package and is more affordable than in previous years. The blacked-out trim and monster 22-inch rims give the RST a look that can only be described as jaw-dropping. The underbody skid-plated Z71 trim is the more rugged-looking of all. Its 20-inch rims are wrapped with all-terrain tires. The High Country is the top-level trim.

Cargo and Cabin

The longer wheelbase adds extra room for both the second and third rows of seats. The cargo area has an additional 23 cubic feet over previous models offering a total of 145 cubic feet. The cargo bay floor is flat and low, making it easier to access.

Infotainment and Driver Aids

The infotainment comes with everything you need when transporting family and friends. The optional rear-seat infotainment system includes two rear 12.6-inch screens. The standard system comes with a 10-inch responsive touchscreen for the driver and syncs with Apple and Android with ease. Driver-assistance features are numerous. Innovative technology to aid drivers when towing is also available.
